The two backdrops for The Holroyd Musical and Dramatic Society production of THE MIKADO measured 9x3 metres each and were painted on 5 panels friont and back.
There were also 4 side entrance panels with Japanese logos and family crests; and two screens with dramatic brush calligraphy painted in red.
A pre-existing painting of a geisha painted in a similar style to the backdrops was also incorporated into the design.
Original illustrations took 5 hours to research and create. Painting of the backdrops took 52 hours. Calligraphy screens 1 hour. 58 hours total.
The costumes and backdrops were an extremely effective visual combination.
